Research on Phytochemical Constituents and Galactagogue Properties of Colocasia esculenta (taro) and Determination of its Nutritive Value
“Research on Phytochemical Constituents and Galactagogue Properties of Colocasia esculenta (taro) and Determination of its Nutritive Value” report book was released by Pi Lalrinpuii, Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family Welfare at her office chamber on 10th September, 2025.
The study was conducted during 2022–23 under the Support of Tribal Research Institute under Ministry of Tribal Affairs and implemented through Social Welfare & Tribal Affairs Department. The research was carried out over a period of one year by the faculty and research team from Laithangpuii College of Pharmacy, with support from Mizoram University.
Bal (taro) is a commonly consumed food among the Mizo community, and it is widely believed that, in addition to its nutritional benefits, it helps enhance breast milk production. Recognising the need to scientifically examine and validate this belief, Mission Foundation Movement initiated the research study.
Speaking on the occasion, the Health Minister said it was encouraging to see a scientific study conducted on bal (taro), a widely consumed traditional Mizo food, and appreciated the efforts of those involved in the research. She noted that taro is deeply rooted in Mizo culture, and that while its benefits are commonly known, scientifically validating these properties through research adds great value. She also expressed that the findings could be effectively highlighted through proper packaging and marketing, showcasing its nutritional value.
