A research report on the declining trend in Chow Chow production was released by Mr. PC Vanlalruata, Hon’ble Minister, Department Agriculture at his office Chamber on 29th August, 2025. The research report book was a result of the research project titled “Chow Chow Growing for Sustainable Development” funded by Tribal Research Institute Under Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Govt. of India with a budget allocation of ₹25 lakh, under the Social Welfare Department.
The project was carried out in Chow Chow cultivation areas of Durtlang, Sihphir, and Lungdai, in close coordination with the Mizoram Iskut Growers Association (MIGA) and technical support from Agriculture Department, KVK Lengpui and ICAR Kolasib.
Mr HL Lalrinawma, Project Coordinator, presented the research findings. He explained that Chow Chow (Chayote) was once produced in large quantities in Sihphir, Durtlang, and Lungdai, and was even exported outside the state, providing livelihoods for many families. However, over the past ten years, Chow Chow production has gradually declined, and in recent times it has reached an almost critical level. He presented a set of recommendations along with proposed future action points derived from the study’s findings. The released Report Book is now available for free download on the MFM website.
