Workshop On Elderly Issues

News  |  February 08, 2024

The Workshop on Elderly Issues took place on 8th February 2024 at Dawrpui Multipurpose Hall, Aizawl, Mizoram. The organizing institution, designated as the Regional Resource Training Centre (RRTC) for Senior Citizens, conducted this workshop as part of the RRTC program funded by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India.

The primary objective of the workshop was to engage in discussions concerning elderly rights and pertinent issues affecting this demographic. The chief guest for the program, Mr. Lalchhuanthanga, MLA Aizawl South II, highlighted the Mizoram government's commitment to addressing elderly care. He emphasized the need for increased attention to the well-being of senior citizens, stressing that the younger generations should play an active role in caring for the elderly in our state.

Dr. Lalchhanhima Sailo, a Clinical Psychologist and the resource person for the workshop, conducted a session on various elderly issues, including Alzheimer's disease. P. Lalremruati, Assistant Professor at Mizoram Law College, introduced the relevant Act to the participants. She explained how this legislation aims to address the basic needs of senior citizens, adjudicate and dispose of matters in their best interest, establish and manage institutions and services, and uphold the rights guaranteed and recognized under the constitution, among other connected matters.

The subsequent segment involved an interactive discussion, where participants freely shared their ideas, suggestions, and advice.  The session provided a platform for meaningful exchanges and a robust engagement from all participants. To gather comprehensive feedback and insights, a questionnaire was distributed among the participants. This questionnaire aimed to elicit their opinions on various aspects, including their feedback on the workshop, ideas regarding the establishment of a day care center, and considerations related to mental health. Participants were encouraged to provide their thoughtful responses to further enrich the outcomes of the workshop.
